It follows people who didn’t leave, didn’t move on, didn’t quite fit anywhere else. And instead of trying to fix that, the film just lets them exist inside it.

Nothing dramatic is forced. The story moves gently, almost reluctantly, like it understands that not everything needs to happen all at once. The characters are imperfect in a way that feels real—guarded, sharp, unexpectedly soft in moments they don’t plan for.

There’s a kind of warmth here, but it’s not obvious. It builds slowly, in small gestures, in shared silences, in the way people start to see each other without saying it out loud.

It feels nostalgic without trying to be. Not in a loud, aesthetic way—but in the quiet recognition of something familiar you can’t fully name.

It doesn’t try to resolve everything.
It just lets you sit in it.

I only watched this film recently, but it keeps finding its way back to me in the quiet, in-between moments—standing at the stove waiting for the water to boil, or at the checkout, waiting for my turn. Out of nowhere, the line “You can’t even dream a whole dream, can you?” drifts back in.

And I think that’s how you know a film has done something right—when it doesn’t stay on the screen, but follows you into the ordinary parts of your day

“You can’t even dream a whole dream can you?” The Holdovers (2023) It lives in that quiet space between holidays—when everything is supposed to feel full, but instead feels a little empty, a little paused.
